Questions

Questions designers and builders ask

Do you build the cabinets or the millwork?

No. Your cabinet maker or millwork shop builds it. We finish new work and refinish existing doors, drawer fronts, panels and trim.

Can you match a finish we already have?

Yes, from a door, a drawer front or a physical sample. We spray a board and you approve it in writing; matching is by eye and by sample, so the approved board matters more than a paint code.

What does a finish board cost?

The first set for a project goes out with the proposal request. A further round is quoted before we spray it, and the terms are in the proposal.

Do you work in the shop or on site?

Doors, drawer fronts and panels are finished in the shop. Boxes, built-ins and trim that can't come out are finished or touched up on site, inside the neighborhoods on our service-area list.

How long are doors in the shop?

Plan on two to three weeks from delivery to ready. A large count, a deep color or a catalyzed system can take longer. Your proposal names the range for your job.

Homes built before 1978: how is lead paint handled?

Federal rules cover paid work that disturbs paint in homes and child-occupied buildings built before 1978. Most of our work is new doors finished in the shop, which doesn't touch old paint. Doors or trim pulled from an older home are handled under the EPA's lead-safe work practices; tell us the age of the house when you send them. The firm's certification number is in the license line at the bottom of every page.

Which finish systems do you spray?

Waterborne and catalyzed systems, named in each proposal along with the sheen and the number of coats. Ask for the product data sheet if your specification names a product.

What do you need from the cabinet shop?

A door list by room, doors that are flat and sanded to the grit the system asks for, and a delivery date. We label every piece and check the count when it arrives.

Who handles hardware?

We remove hardware, bag it by room and send it back with the doors. Your installer refits it.

What if a door arrives damaged?

We photograph it at intake and tell you before we price a repair. Repairs beyond filling and sanding are written as a change in the proposal.

What does the warranty cover?

The finish on work we sprayed. Terms, limits and exclusions are in your written warranty.

Can the proposal follow our finish schedule?

Yes. Send the schedule and the drawings and Essie Braxton writes the proposal line by line in your numbering.

Do you send a certificate of insurance and a W-9?

Both go out with the proposal, so your office can set up the account before work starts.

Do you work with homeowners directly?

Mostly through designers and builders. A homeowner who already has doors and a color is welcome to send them; the trade desk will say what makes sense.

Ask the trade desk

Not on the list?

Name the finish, the substrate and the date you need approval. Essie Braxton replies in shop hours.
